Marilyn works
in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, in a studio overlooking her interesting
garden. She had a traditional art & craft training at Farnham
College of Art (now The Surrey Institute) specialising in Three-dimensional
design (ceramics) where she experienced most forms of making and
production.
She spent many
years teaching art and design as well as making her own work. She
now concentrates on making decorated earthenware. She throws plates,
dishes and bowls and hand-builds jugs, clocks, vases and platters.
The work is made from red clay and brightly decorated with underglaze
colours and oxides on a white slip background. She outlines with
sgraffito and finishes with a clear glaze fired to 1100° in
an electric kiln. She enjoys making colourful, decorative and functional
ware, some which enhances the enjoyment of food and drink. She draws
her inspiration from nature, ethnic art, and the work of the Impressionists.
Marilyn sells
her work through craft shows and galleries in many parts of the
country, from Cornwall to Cumbria. She is a professional member
of the Craft Potters Association of Great Britain, and has exhibited
at their shop in London. Her work is in public and private collections
in the United Kingdom, Europe, the United States, Australia and
New Zealand.
In the last
two years she has had a solo exhibition at a local Museum and Art
Centre and has worked with children in two schools to make tile
panels both for the interior of the school and the playground. She
is presently working on a third project for a school in Hitchin
Hertfordshire.
