MARSHALL COLMAN
Marshall Colman (b.1946) began making ceramics while a student in the North Staffordshire Potteries. His first interest was in reduction-fired stoneware, which he worked on in his first studio in Camborne, 1969-70.
He worked with Judith Partridge at the Rodmell Pottery in 1971 when she was making maiolica. All his work is now in this medium, using red earthenware covered in a tin oxide glaze fired to 1080 ° C.
He works in two styles, the first influenced by naïve 17th century maiolica makers, the second using thrown and altered forms to explore balance, texture and surface marking.
